Australia Become World Champions For The 6th Time

In the opening move, Cummins surprised many by opting to bowl first after winning the toss, attributing the decision to the expected dew. Initially, it seemed a misstep as Rohit Sharma capitalized on Australia’s bowlers during the Powerplay. However, the Aussie bowlers, especially Starc, displayed exceptional discipline, exploiting minimal assistance from the pitch. Despite the slow, dry conditions, Hazlewood and Starc consistently targeted the stumps, with strategic field placements curbing India’s scoring options.

As the pressure built, Rohit Sharma succumbed to a spectacular catch by Travis Head, turning the tide in Australia’s favor. Cummins, seizing the moment, dismissed Shreyas Iyer in the next over, further tilting the momentum. Rohit’s dismissal marked a significant blow, considering he contributed 62% of India’s total.

Virat Kohli, aiming to anchor the innings, built a partnership with KL Rahul. However, Cummins struck again, removing Kohli for 54. The seamers introduced reverse swing, stifling India’s run flow. Starc and Cummins continued their excellent bowling, restricting India to 240, the first instance of them being bowled out in the tournament.

Australia’s chase began energetically, with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh providing a brisk start. However, India fought back, claiming crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Steve Smith. Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne stabilized the innings, surviving the Powerplay and accelerating against spinners. Head’s remarkable century, the first in a Men’s World Cup final since 2011, guided Australia towards victory.

Despite a late twist, where Head fell two runs short of the target, Glenn Maxwell’s entry ensured Australia’s triumph. The victory marked Australia as the first team to win a Men’s World Cup on foreign soil since 2007. Cummins, the reluctant captain in ODIs, led with distinction, capping off an incredible year with the World Test Championship mace, Ashes urn, and now, the World Cup trophy. The resilience displayed by Cummins and his team throughout the campaign showcased their ability to weather storms and emerge victorious on the grandest stage.
