Gen Munir Meets UN Chief To Discuss Israel Hamas War
The Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, has appealed to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to mobilize the global community urgently, urging for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza as Gen Munir Meets UN Chief To Discuss Israel Hamas War. He stressed that the enduring resolution to the crises lies in a “two-state solution,” as reported by the military’s media affairs wing.
These sentiments were conveyed by Gen Munir during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Friday, marking the army chief’s first official visit to the United States since assuming office in November 2022. The ongoing visit has seen the COAS engaging with key governmental and military figures, including meetings with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense (retired) General Lloyd J. Austin, Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, Deputy National Security Adviser Jonathan Finer, and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown.
A statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) today highlighted Gen Munir’s call on Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York, where he was warmly welcomed. The statement acknowledged that the UN chief “appreciated the contributions made by Pakistan Army and contingents of the law enforcement agencies who have remained committed to the peace and stability of the world.”
Addressing the Gaza issue without mentioning Israel explicitly, the statement quoted the army chief as reaffirming Pakistan’s stance on Palestine. Gen Munir urged the UNSG to galvanize the international community for an immediate halt to hostilities in Gaza, citing the prevention of a humanitarian tragedy. He reiterated that a lasting solution lies in the two-state framework. The statement emphasized the COAS’s deep concerns for the innocent civilians facing brutal targeting and insufficient humanitarian relief.
Highlighting the Kashmir issue, Gen Munir asserted that peace in South Asia would remain elusive until a resolution aligns with UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. He condemned what he termed as “illegal Indian efforts to change the status of Jammu and Kashmir,” deeming it a violation of UNSC resolutions. The statement added that Guterres acknowledged these concerns and thanked Gen Munir for the visit to the UN Headquarters.
According to a report from Dawn, COAS conveyed Pakistan’s concerns over the situation in India-held Kashmir and Afghanistan. Specifically, Pakistan expressed worry about the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to endorse the merger of occupied Kashmir and called on the UN to fulfill its pledge to enable Kashmiris to decide their future through a plebiscite. Additionally, Pakistan raised alarms about a sudden increase in militant attacks and sought international support to end the “cross-border terrorism from Afghanistan.” as Gen Munir Meets UN Chief To Discuss Israel Hamas War.
