Google to Delete Several Accounts, Is Yours On the List?

Users are advised to take heed of a recent warning issued by Google, alerting them to the potential deletion of inactive Gmail accounts slated for December. This announcement aligns with Google’s prior declaration in May 2023, indicating its intent to remove accounts dormant for a period of two years.

The communication from Google serves as a proactive heads-up to users, emphasizing that this policy extends beyond Gmail to encompass inactive Google accounts associated with various services such as Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Photos. The deadline for users to take action and prevent potential deletion is December 1, 2023.

Google plans to ensure users are well-informed and prompted to react by sending multiple reminders, including recovery emails, to those with inactive Gmail accounts until November 30. Failure to take any action, whether logging in or engaging with the accounts, may result in the deletion of the accounts or their content.

This policy stems from Google’s security concerns related to inactive accounts. In a blog post in May, the company highlighted that inactive accounts pose a significant security risk, as their security diminishes over time, making them susceptible to hacking and potential misuse for illegal purposes or the spread of spam.

It’s essential for users to recognize that this policy is not a one-time event. Moving forward, if a user allows their account to remain inactive for two years, Google reserves the right to delete it.

To prevent deletion and safeguard their accounts, users are advised to log in at least once every two years. Notably, this login activity doesn’t necessarily have to occur in Gmail specifically; using the account in any Google service, such as YouTube or Google Drive, will suffice.

It’s important to note that this policy primarily impacts personal Google accounts and does not extend to accounts associated with organizations. Google actively encourages users to take the necessary steps to maintain the security and viability of their Google accounts.
