Imran Khan Confirms His Letter Written To IMF. Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), made a significant political move in the midst of the controversial February 8 general elections. During a media briefing following his attendance at a hearing on the £190 million reference at Adiala Jail, Imran disclosed that he had composed a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In this letter, he urged the global financial institution to meticulously scrutinize the election results before disbursing any new financial support to Islamabad.

The crux of Imran’s concern revolved around the potential repercussions of securing a loan under the current tumultuous circumstances. He questioned the viability of repaying such a loan and expressed apprehensions about its potential contribution to an increase in poverty. Imran emphasized the imperative need for substantial investment in the country to mitigate the escalating burden of loans, underscoring the critical role of political stability in this regard.

Moreover, Imran asserted that various institutions had been compromised to ensure the selection of Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He accused the election process of being rigged in favor of Nawaz, claiming unfair allegations against himself. Imran pointed to the Rawalpindi commissioner, initially a whistleblower on poll rigging, alleging that the former official had been subjected to abduction and torture, leading to a suspicious update of his software.

The announcement of the letter to the IMF came after PTI Senator Ali Zafar’s statement the day before, revealing Imran’s decision to seek an audit of the February 8 elections before engaging in discussions for a new loan program with Islamabad. However, the IMF, on the subsequent Friday, expressed its willingness to collaborate with the new Pakistani government, disregarding Imran’s demand for an election audit.

Despite Imran’s efforts, the efficacy of the letter remains uncertain. Earlier that day, Zafar clarified that the country should continue engaging with the IMF to ensure financial discipline, good governance, and economic stability. He reiterated that Pakistan would always be a top priority for the PTI and endorsed initiatives aligning with the benefit of the country and national interest.

Furthermore, PTI leader Barrister Gohar Khan defended the decision to write the letter to the IMF, emphasizing that such letters were not unprecedented and had been sent before. He dismissed concerns about the letter’s impact on the country’s economy, security, or democracy. Gohar criticized the court proceedings related to the Al-Qadir Trust case, alleging their illegality and unconstitutionality. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the media’s restricted access to court proceedings and highlighted the PTI’s active contributions to improving the country’s economy, legal system, and democracy as a parliamentary participant.
