Israel-Palestine Conflict : Who is supporting Who?
Profound waves of solidarity for Palestine are sweeping across continents, uniting voices from the Middle East to Asia, Europe, and the United States. These gatherings, with tens of thousands of participants, express their unwavering support for Palestinians and condemn Israel’s escalated strikes on Gaza, a retaliatory measure following Hamas attacks a week earlier. The Israel Palestine Conflict continues.
In response to this intensified violence, Jewish communities in the United States, France, and other nations have rallied in solidarity with Israel. The recent Hamas attack in Gaza, the deadliest onslaught on Israeli civilians in 75 years, has elicited sympathy and support from Western governments and many citizens. However, it has also provoked anger, especially in Arab and Muslim countries.
Pro-Palestine:
Turkish crowds congregated outside mosques, chanting slogans against Israel and saluting Hamas. In Nablus, West Bank, Palestinian youths clashed with the Israeli military, setting fires on the streets. Rome witnessed a massive Palestinian flag passed overhead during a protest, with similar demonstrations taking place in various European cities, including Denmark’s Braband and Berlin, where some protesters were detained by police.
United States has strengthened their police presence in Jewish and Muslim neighborhoods as demonstrators have shown solidarity with both sides in the conflict.
Baghdad sees, tens of thousands of Iraqis gathered in central Tahrir Square, waving Palestinian flags and burning the Israeli flag while chanting anti-US and anti-Israeli slogans. In Iran, state-organized rallies in support of Hamas were held, while in Lebanon, Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem declared their readiness to contribute to the fighting.
Yemen saw thousands of citizens carrying large Palestinian flags in support of Palestinians in Sana’a.
The Anti-Palestine Perspective:
In stark contrast, Germany and France have banned pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Several Western countries have increased security at synagogues and Jewish schools, fearing that protests could turn violent.
An intriguing aspect of the disinformation flooding social media since Hamas’s attack in October is its source: right-leaning accounts primarily based in India. These handles who spread disinformation, have targeted Palestine negatively or supported Israel, peddling false narratives that portray Palestinians as fundamentally brutal.
For instance, accounts circulated a video claiming to show Hamas kidnapping a Jewish baby and beheading a young boy. Many of these misleading narratives have gained significant traction.
Pakistan’s Position:
In a powerful display of unity and compassion, Pakistan witnessed waves of support for the oppressed Palestinians in their hour of need. From the vibrant streets of Lahore to the bustling metropolis of Karachi, and the scenic terrains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the nation united under the banner of humanity.
Lahore resounded with a resolute call for justice, as a massive rally convened on Mall Road. The Jamaat e Islami Pakistan spearheaded this gathering, where women and children joined hands with a colossal Palestinian flag fluttering above them.
Karachi, Pakistan’s bustling heart, witnessed several demonstrations following Friday prayers, all echoing solidarity with the Palestinians. Over 200 Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) supporters congregated in the Kharadar area, demanding an immediate end to the horrors faced by Gazans at the hands of Israel.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resolute protestors gathered in the Malakand and Hazara divisions, holding powerful demonstrations against Israeli atrocities in Gaza, Palestine. In a symbolic act, the Karakoram Highway in Kohistan was blocked as voices united against the ongoing Palestinian genocide. Protesters fervently called upon the United Nations to intervene and put an end to these injustices.
Pakistani Government’s Stance:
Pakistani’s stance has historically been pro-Palestine. However, initial developments showed a milder response compared to other nations traditionally supportive of Palestine. Interim Pakistani Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar posted a tweet expressing concern over the situation’s human cost and called for restraint, advocating for a two-state solution with a sovereign State of Palestine. This stance represents a deviation from Pakistan’s typical anti-Israel sentiment.
But now Pakistan has taken a stand against Israel. In a recent weekly news briefing in Islamabad, Pakistan expressed its deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to Israeli aggression. The Foreign Office spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, called upon the international community to collaborate in securing a ceasefire to alleviate the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza as Pakistan’s raises Concern.
On Israel Palestine, Pakistan said in the UN: Grave atrocities against humanity persist at this very moment, spanning across regions like Palestine, Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and other areas marred by oppression, occupation, and violence,” passionately conveyed Rabia Ijaz, the Pakistani representative, addressing the General Assembly’s Sixth Committee. In a poignant discussion centered on Crimes against Humanity, Ms. Ijaz, a second secretary at the Pakistan Mission to the UN, shed light on these ongoing human rights crises. These compelling statements underscore the urgent need for global attention and action.
